The most notable winner of the early awards was Javier Bardem, who won for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal as a serial killer in No Country for Old Men. Bardem was a heavy favorite, with Oscar odds of 1/16 to win.

Other winners included:Elizabeth: The Golden Age (costume design),Ratatouille (animated feature), La Vie en Rose (makeup) The Golden Compass (visual effects), Sweeney Todd (art/set decoration), Les Mozart des Pickpockets (live action short) and Peter and the Wolf (animated short).

Host Jon Stewart opened the show with a monologue that mentioned the recently concluded strike and featured jokes about the top three U.S. presidential candidates – Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain.
