Betty Broderick once led a charmed life. Married to a prominent medical malpractice attorney, Daniel Broderick III, with four children, Betty lived as a socialite in La Jolla, California. The couple divorced in 1985 after 16 years of marriage after Daniel had been cheating on Betty with Linda Kolkena, his assistant. During their divorce, Betty Broderick accused Daniel of using his legal influence to cheat her out of her share of his income. He was awarded custody of their children. Betty was also insanely jealous of Daniel's relationship with Linda, who he had married, and was bitter about their affair, which eventually drove her to murder the couple while they lay in bed.
Allegedly, Dan's last words were, "Okay, you shot me. I'm dead."
During the trial, Betty claimed she was a victim of battered-wife syndrome and was driven to kill by a prolonged divorce and custody battle. After two trials, however, Betty was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, and later sentenced to 32-years-to-life in prison, with her first possible parole date in March of 2010.
