With a stunning performance, five awards and a thumb in the eye to the genre that turned its back on them, the Dixie Chicks are the talk of the town tonight.

The trio from Texas were the top winners at the Grammys, capturing honors for the top three awards: record, song and album of the year. In fact, by the time they picked up the coveted album of the year award, lead vocalist Natalie Maines joked, “I'm ready to make nice!”

The Chicks beat out Gnarls Barkley, John Mayer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Justin Timberlake to win the Album of the Year honor with their compelling album Taking the Long Way which chronicles their lives after the fallout from Maines’ anti-Bush comments.

This is only the second time in Grammy history that a country-oriented album has won this honor.

Other multiple winners tonight include Mary J. Blige and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Chilis collected three of their four awards before the show, but picked up Best Rock Album as the last award of the night.

Blige took home Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, both for Be Without You and Best R&B Album for The Breakthrough.
