The work of megaphone wielding Ty Pennington and his crew of teary designers, as well as 1,800 workers, most of whom had volunteered, was in vain apparently. An Extreme Makeover given to a Lake City, Ga. home is now up for auction after the Harper family put their home up for collateral in a failed construction business venture.

Three years ago, the ABC show bulldozed the Harper family’s decrepit home with an overflowing septic tank and replaced it with a stunning four-bedroom mini-mansion that towered over ranch and split-level homes in their Clayton County neighborhood. The Harper’s also received $250,000 for a home maintenance and scholarship fund for their three children from Extreme Makeover as well as the sponsor, Beazer Homes, who sponsored the build.

Lake City Mayor Willie Oswalt, who worked on the home as a volunteer, was annoyed by the Harper’s situation.

“Beazer gave them $100,000 cash, paid their mortgage off and they still can't make it,” Oswalt said. "It's aggravating. It just makes you mad. You do that much work, and they just squander it.”

The home is set to go to auction on the steps of the Clayton County Courthouse Aug. 5, 2008.
