Honda introduced the first commercial hydrogen powered car, the FCX Clarity. The vehicle, which will have a limited release in Southern California in August, runs on an electric motor which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and only emits water vapor in an attempt to begin a cycle to decrease global warming.

The first owners of this vehicle will include the Hollywood elite. Jamie Lee Curtis, 24 actress Laura Harris and movie producer Ron Yerxa.

John Mendel, executive vice president of America Honda Motor Co., said it was "an especially significant day for American Honda as we plant firm footsteps toward the mainstreaming of fuel cell cars."

The obstacle facing the cars are the lack of hydrogen fuel stations. For its release in Southern California, Honda could only select recipients who lived close to the stations which are located in Torrance, Santa Monica and Irvine. Although Governor Schwarzenegger has called for more hydrogen stations, progress has been slow.

The company has not specified when, or if, the car will be available for mass-market sales.
