After actor Joaquin Phoenix curiously decided to turn a lucrative acting career into a harebrained scheme to become a rapper, it seems he may be realizing that his true talent lies in delivering lines from scripts, rather than standing on a stage busting rhymes.
Whether or not his short-lived rap career was a publicity stunt for a mock-documentary remains to be seen, but Contact Music is reporting that Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire sound designer named Resul Pookutty let the cat of the bag that Phoenix heading back to the movies in an Indian newspaper.
According to Pookutty, Phoenix has taken the role of tragic writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Pookutty told India's Mumbai Mirror, "I couldn't be happier because I am doing a period film. It is a very special challenge because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854.
"It's an adaptation of The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allan Poe which happened just months before his death. Joaquin plays Edgar Allen Poe."
Poe married his 13-year old cousin, Virginia Clemm - whose death inspired much of his writings, such as the haunting poem, Annabel Lee. Considered one of the greatest contributors to American literature with such writings as the poem "The Raven," in 1849, Poe was found incoherent on the streets of Baltimore at the age of 40, strangely dressed in clothes that were not his own. He died in the hospital days later.
