John Edwards, who once had a promising career in politics, is now finally facing up to what everyone already knew - announcing today that yes, he fathered a love child, two-year-old Frances Quinn Hunter with his former mistress, Rielle Hunter. John engaged in the affair with Hunter while his wife Elizabeth Edwards  was battling cancer. Edwards made the announcement just two weeks before the launch of a former aide's book, which apparently discloses  details of the affair and names  Edwards as the father.

"I am Quinn's father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves," Edwards said in  a statement. "It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter, and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me," Edwards said.

"To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry," Edwards said. "I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace."

Edwards is also  facing a federal grand jury investigation into whether he misused campaign money to use Hunter as the campaign videograper and also pay her off to keep  the lid on their  affair.

Edwards  admitted to the affair to his wife Elizabeth  in 2006, just days after he announced his bid to run for presidency, which was eventually won by Barack Obama. In the memoir Elizabeth penned entitled, Resilience,  Elizabeth  claimed she wanted  John to drop out of the race to protect their family from the impending media fallout, but stood by his side anyway. She went on to say that news of her husband's affair made her vomit.Rielle Hunter is a Santa Barbara-based blonde divorcée, who wound up becoming pregnant - a story which was broken by the National Enquirer.
