Meredith Baxter, known for her role as Elise Keaton on the hit '80's sitcom Family Ties, was recently outed by the National Enquirer for being on a gay cruise. Baxter, who has been married three times and has five children, wanted to take the helm of her own story before the Enquirer made up their own version of her story.
"I did not want some tabloid to take a story and make it up," Baxter told Matt Lauer on the Today show. "So I wanted it to be in my own words."
Baxter didn't come to the realization she was gay until seven years ago. "I want to say I'm a lesbian, and it was a later-in-life recognition."
Baxter told Lauer she didn't disclose this before because she has "always lived a very private life," and that "to come out and disclose stuff is very antithetical to who I am."
Baxter also said she "got involved with someone I never expected to get involved with, and it was an awakening. I understood why I have the issue in my life ... I was involved with people who made me think they're the problem. It never occurred to me, that it was me."
