Natalie Portman has ditched her role in director John Maybury's upcoming adaptation of Emily Bronte's classic tragedy, Wuthering Heights.

Portman was to have a starring role of Catherine Earnshaw, the love interest of the passionate and doomed Heathcliff, played by British actor Michael Fassbender.

Portman cited a scheduling conflict with an as-yet unannounced project as the reason for her pulling out. Producers are now scrambling for a replacement for Portman, especially as her departure from the project was announced just days before the Cannes film festival, during which the movie is to be sold to international distributors.
