Nicolas Cage and his new film National Treasure: Book of Secrets took the top spot at this weekend’s box office, earning more than the combined totals of four other high powered debuts.
The action sequel earned $45.5 million, while last weekend's champion, the Will Smith sci-fi thriller I Am Legend, slipped to second spot with $34.2 million. Legend’s ten day haul now stands at $137.5 million.
Christmas kids’ movie Alvin and the Chipmunks was also down one spot to third with $29 million, and a 10-day total of $84.7 million.
Political comedy Charlie Wilson's War starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts opened in fourth with $9.6 million, just ahead of Johnny Depp musical Sweeney Todd in fifth with $9.35 million.
Both are leading contenders at the Golden Globes next month, with five and four nominations each.
Also new this weekend were Hilary Swank’s romance P.S. I Love You in sixth with a modest $6.5 million, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story in eighth with $4.1 million. Teen pregnancy flick Juno finished tenth with $3.4 million.
