The So You Think You Can Dance season has just begun and the show's creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe has sparked controversy after turning his nose up when two male dancers, one who was gay and the other who was not, danced together during the audition rounds.
Lythgoe told a male dancing duo: "I think you probably alienate a lot of our audience. I mean, we’ve always had the guys dance together on the show, but I’ve -- they’ve never really done it in each other’s arms before.”
After he got shit from the blogosphere, Nigel took to Twitter to try to clean up the mess, but ened up making it worse.
He said, "I hear I'm taking a beating on the web due to my comments regarding same sex ballroom I thought I was the most accepting of it on the panel?"
Then he said, "The same sex ballroom guys did remind me of Blades of Glory. However, I'm not a fan of 'Brokeback' Ballroom."
After GLAAD demanding an apology for the dancers and the gay community from the network and Lythgoe, he finally offered up: “I sincerely regret the fact that I have upset people with the poor word choices and comments I made both during the taping of the So You Think You Can Dance audition and on my personal status update. I am not homophobic and it was extremely upsetting for me to be classed as such. Professionally and personally, I believe the sexual orientation of an auditioner or contestant is irrelevant. I trust that my humor will be more sensitive and mindful moving forward.”
