The people responsible for the Oscars had a lot of explaining and apologizing to do after all was said and done. After recently deceased actor Brad Renfro was left out of the "In Memoriam" montage, Whoopi Goldberg also felt the sting of the snub when she was omitted from the hosting reel, and she broke down in tears on The View the following day.
Co-host Sherri Shepherd asked Monday whether she had upset anybody, Whoopi replied: “Undoubtedly I pissed somebody off yet again. You know what, I don't—I don't know.”
Whoopi hosted the Oscars four times and also took home an Oscar in 1990, when she won in the best supporting actress category for her performance in Ghost. She was also nominated in 1985, for her role in The Color Purple. However, in the montage of presenters, Goldberg was left out.
According to the Academy, the omission was a sheer oversight, not a snub. The award show's producer, Gil Cates told People magazine:
"No harm was intended, and I feel very, very badly that she was left out. I'm going to call her and tell her that."
