Resident Evil: Extinction Tops Weekend Box Office

Milla Jovovich fighting flesh hungry zombies topped the weekend box office with Resident Evil: Extinction. The third installment based on the popular video game opened in the number one spot and earned $24 million in ticket sales.

Romantic comedy Good Luck Chuck, starring Jessica Alba and Dane Cook debuted in second place with $14 million despite being hated by the critics.

Last weekend’s top movie, Jodie Foster drama The Brave One, fell to number three with $7.4 million, raising its total to $25.1 million.

Western remake 3:10 to Yuma held the fourth spot with $6.35 million.

Landing in fifth spot was Eastern Promises, the drama starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts set among Russian mobsters in London. The film expanded from a handful of theaters into nationwide release and earned $5.7 million.

Sydney White, starring Amanda Bynes as a college freshman who teams with frat house dorks to fight campus snobs, premiered at number six with $5.3 million.

Rounding out the top ten were Mr. Woodcock in seventh with $5 million, Superbad in eighth with $3.1 million, The Bourne Ultimatum in ninth with $2.8 million and Dragon Wars in tenth with $2.5 million.
