Richard Blumenthal, the 63-year-old who has been Connecticut's attorney general since 1990, will seek to succeed fellow Democrat Christopher Dodd in the U.S. Senate.

Blumenthal will announce his candidacy at noon  today while Dodd will announce that he will not be seeking a  sixth term in November.

Dodd's retirement comes on the heels of  criticism for his involvement in the Wall Street bailout package. He also was scrutinized  over a low-interest loan he received from Countrywide Financial. Dodd also lost his bid for the 2008 presidency.

"The United States Senate has been a longtime public service goal, and I would be proud and honored to have the opportunity to serve the people of Connecticut ... in the Senate," Blumenthal  told the Associated Press.

Blumenthal will face Linda McMahon, CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, who is running as a Republican.
