Polish director Roman Polanski has been taken into custody on a 31-year-old U.S. arrest warrant for statutory rape. The organizers of the Zurich Film Festival, which was set to honor him with a lifetime achievement award, say Polanski was detained by police on Saturday. He was arrested in the Zurich airport while trying to enter Switzerland to attend the film festival, at the request of US authorities.

In 1977, Polanski pled guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with13-year-old Samantha Geimer, but then fled the United States before he could be sentenced. He was 44-years-old at the time.

Polanski obtained permission from Geimer's mother to photographer her for an edition of French Vogue. During one of the sessions, which took place at home of actor Jack Nicholson in Los Angeles, Polanski drugged and raped her.

"We did photos with me drinking champagne," Geimer had said in a statement. "Toward the end it got a little scary, and I realized he had other intentions and I knew I was not where I should be. I just didn't quite know how to get myself out of there."

Geimer testified that Polanski gave her champagne and quaaludes and performed various sexual acts.

Polanski has lived in France ever since to avoid being arrested because as a French citizen, he was protected by France's limited extradition with the United States.

However, Geimer seems to have forgiven him. In 2008, Geimer stated in an interview: "I think he's sorry, I think he knows it was wrong. I don't think he's a danger to society. I don't think he needs to be locked up forever and no one has ever come out ever - besides me - and accused him of anything. It was 30 years ago now. It's an unpleasant memory - I can live with it."
