Cannes loves Michael Moore. The filmmaker is in France this week to debut his new film Sicko, an attack on the U.S. health care system. The film marks Moore’s triumphant return to the Cannes Film Festival and a break from the controversy that surrounds him on US soil
Moore is a Cannes favorite. His last film, the war-on-terror documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 won the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or, in 2004. And Sicko is blowing away the competition, with more than 2,000 people loudly applauding the film’s screening.
Moore is facing some criticism back in the US where conservative politicians have denounced him for taking sick 9/11 rescuers to Cuba for treatment. The Treasury Department investigated Moore for possibly breaking the U.S. trade and travel embargo on the communist country and he could very likely face a fine or jail time.
