National hero Steven Slater appeared in court today in New York City court and will voluntarily admit himself into a mental health program for treatment, if the D.A. agrees to a plea bargain. Slater, who faces a whopping seven years in prison for escaping his job as a flight attendant via emergency chute, is facing charges of reckless endangerment, trespassing and criminal mischief.

Prosecutors argue that Slater could have killed somebody when he deployed the emergency chute while the plane was on the ground at JFK.

D.A. Richard A. Brown said in an news release on August 10,  "The emergency chute deploys at 3,000 pounds per-square inch within seconds, and could easily injure or kill ground crews or others on the tarmac who are unaware the chute has been activated."

"We continue to focus on the seriousness of the acts of the defendant," Assistant D.A.  Benjamin Mantell said.

During the four minute hearing, Slater did not enter a plea and remained quiet while he lawyer spoke.

"We're looking for as favorable a disposition for Mr. Slater as we can," Slater's defense attorney  Daniel Horowitz said.

For Slater's part, he had claimed that during the infamous August 9th incident, he got into an argument with a passenger who wound up hitting him in the head with the overhead bin. He then took to the intercom to say his farewell,  grabbed two beers, activated the plane's escape chute and drove home.

JetBlue, however, says that there is no evidence to support Slater's claim that a passenger hit him with an overhead bin - though it should be noted that Slater indeed had a gash on his forehead when police later arrested him at his home in Belle Harbor, Queens.

Slater became an overnight sensation after the incident, but Slater's publicist told the media Slater  has been in  California caring for his mother, who is terminally ill.
