Forget the polls. If you want to know who’s leading the race to be the next U.S. president, check the political betting odds.

Prior to last week’s Republican CNN/You Tube debate, Mike Huckabee was an 11/1 long shot to win the GOP candidacy. A week later and the governor of Arkansas is at 3/1, a stunning drop in odds due to Huckabee’s dominating performance in the debate. With the Iowa caucus coming early in the new year, Huckabee hit key notes with voters because of what they perceived as his integrity and honesty.

His rise has correlated with the fall of two of the pre-debate favorites. Rudy Giuliani, previously the 20/21 betting favorite, is at 11/10. Still the favorite, but not by nearly as much. Fred Thompson’s odds rose from 4/1 to 6/1 while Mitt Romney was steady at 11/2.

On the Democrat side, Hillary Clinton remains an overwhelming favorite at 1/6 despite the fact she is polling behind Barack Obama in Iowa. Obama is at 12/5 in what appears to be a two-person race.
