Wives with Knives: Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned

Just this past week we learned that former NFL star QB Steve McNair was killed in his sleep by his (debt-ridden and bitter) girlfriend -- who suspected McNair of cheating on her with another younger woman. And now this? Another former champion and pro athlete murdered by his angry, jealous wife -- this time while he lay there on the floor of their hotel room, passed out drunk ?

Wives with knives, chicks with picks...WTF?

Amanda Rodrigues, the wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti, is being held by Brazilian authorities and is now considered a suspect in the boxer's death. Gatti's body was found early Saturday in a hotel room at the Porto de Galinhas resort in northeastern Brazil, and it looks like he was strangled to death by a strap of a purse.

Gatti's body was found early Saturday in a hotel room at the Porto de Galinhas resort in northeastern Brazil, and it looks like he was strangled to death by a strap of a purse -- after he had passed out drunk.

A police spokeswoman said "there were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor."

Police also believe that Gatti's wife first tried to kill her husband using a kitchen knife to the back of his head while he was passed out, but then when she learned that wasn't enough to kill him, she pulled out her purse.

Police are also looking into witness reports that the couple's yelling and screaming could be heard across the resort and that even prior to this incident it was widely known that they were extremely jealous of one another and that their relationship was "volatile" at best. Earlier this year Gatti was charged with assaulting Rodriguez and was later released on bail and ordered to stay at least 200 meters away from Rodriguez at all times.

Apparently the couple was at the posh resort celebrating their second honeymoon with their 10-month-old baby.

Gatti (40-9, 31 knockouts), nicknamed "Thunder," started his professional career in 1991 and won world championships in two different weight classes, at 130 pounds and 140 pounds. He was born in Italy but grew up in Montreal, Canada.
