With a sire like Tiznow, who achieved the rare feat of winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice, American Lion cannot be discounted. Trained by Eoin Harty for WinStar Farms, American Lion burst onto the scene in 2009 with two straight wins – including his first graded stakes score in the $100,000 Gr. 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes in Nov. 2009. In his three races as a 3-year-old, he has finished no worse than fourth, and captured a front-running victory in his last outing, the $500,000 Gr. 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Park on April 3.

American Lion has been training over the synthetic Polytrack surface at Keeneland, posting a recent 5-furlong work in 1:02 on April 20. One of the big questions about this son of Tiznow is that he has never raced on dirt and will get only a couple of works at Churchill Downs before the big race – but he certainly has the pedigree to shine on any surface. David Flores, who rode the colt to victory in the Illinois Derby where he boosted his earnings to $378,000, will get the call.
