2011 Preakness Stakes Profile: Flashpoint
Can Flashpoint win the 2011 Preakness Stakes? (AP Images)
It was expected that the Preakness would bring out the speediest group of horses for the 2011 Triple Crown and Flashpoint is no exception. The grey colt has tremendous sprint abilities and along with runners like Dance City and Shackleford will make the race quick out of the gate.

Flashpoint’s point sire was Pomeroy who raced successfully at the stakes level winning the Grade 1 King’s Bishop in 2004. However, Pomeroy had no real other success of note. Going back further however, we do find bloodlines from Mr. Prospector, Secretariat and Northern Dancer which he shares with a couple of his Preakness competitors.
Flashpoint is little raced having no races as a two year old. In his three starts since then, he has won twice and finished fourth in the Grade 1 Florida Derby which was a strong race featuring the likes of Dialed In and Shackleford. His second race was a very compelling win in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes. These are certainly good results by any standards given so few races.
Given his strong competiveness in his two stakes races Flashpoint is certainly not outclassed by the field, but it remains to be seen if he is the class of the field. The length of the course is the best suited to him out of the three Triple Crown races but his best results have come at 6 and 7 furlongs respectively. In the 1 1/8th mile Florida Derby Flashpoint was among the leaders early on but faded to fourth- so distance even at Pimlico might be a factor.
