Another Big Derby Win for Frankie Dettori

Italian jockey Frankie Dettori won his second derby in 24 hours at the Prix du Jockey-Club-Mitsubishi Motors atop Lawman at Chantilly on Sunday. He had won the Vodafone Derby by five lengths the afternoon before with Authorized.

"I've won the effing Derby, sir," Dettori proclaimed to the clerk of scales as he knelt before him. The clerk of scales primary job is to know who won the race and by how much. It was Dettori’s 15th attempt at winning the Vodafone Derby.

Dettori led the Prix du Jockey-Club-Mitsubishi Motors from start to finish claiming the prize of 857,000 euros. He had earned his spot in the race three weeks ago with a victory in a Group Three contest at Chantilly.

There have only been three other jockeys to win the Anglo-French double in the same year: Pat Eddery (1990), Willie Carson (1980) and Lester Piggott (1972).

"People wait all their lives to win the Derby, and I win two in 24 hours," Dettori said when asked about the victories. "I don't feel a thing any more. I don't know what's going on."
