As one of the biggest sports events of the year, you can imagine how tough it was to see the 2007 Breeders' Cup live.
So, picture the surprise of Bodog Racebook player and longtime horse racing enthusiast John Liepe of La Grande Park, Illinois when he found out he had won Bodog's Triple Crown Contest.
“I was like, ‘You’re kidding me, right? This is baloney,’” Liepe, 51, said in a telephone interview with Bodog Beat. “It was a shock, let’s put it that way.”
All Liepe needed to do to win first prize in the contest was to place bets ($20 minimum) on each of the Triple Crown races (The Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes), and he was automatically entered into a random draw.
Along with a seat at one of horse racing’s biggest events, Liepe won a trip for two to New Jersey to watch the event (he brought his son along), a four–day, three-night stay at the beautiful Berkeley Carteret Oceanfront Hotel and $500 in spending money.
And, what would someone with 30-plus years of horse racing experience do with $500 to spend?
“We did some bettin’ with limited success, of course,” Liepe explained. “We did hit a 10-cent superfecta in the sixth race with Lahudood that got us around 120 bucks.
“They are tough races to handicap, because there are just so many good horses.”
Regardless of whether he won or lost, you’d be hard-pressed to hear Liepe complain about anything that happened during the big weekend.
“It was great,” Liepe said. “The quality of the horses was the best, and almost every race had a really exciting finish.
“I just wanna thank the Bodog Racebook, I thought it was great. It was a lot of fun. I would’ve never gone to New Jersey or the Breeders’ Cup if it wasn’t for this contest. And, I’m glad I did.”
