Del Mar California 'Dreamin Handicap Results

The 2009 California Dreamin' Handicap was won by Dewey’s Special on Del Mar Racetrack last Sunday. The gelding ran most of the race in second place until taking the lead with a burst of speed at the end of the final turn. He held on for a 1 ¾ length win over Nitro Active.

Ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., Dewey's Special paid $8.60, $5.40, and $4.40. Nitro Active paid $12.20 and $8.20, while the longest shot in the field, Bert's Law, was a nose back in third and paid $13.80 to show. The favorite, Bold Chieftain, was never in the race and finished a dismal sixthin a field of eight horses.

Dewey’s Special recorded his fourth win in 10 starts, and with the $60K first-place prize, pushed his lifetime earnings up to $223,280. The four-year-old California-bred gelding trained by Ron Ellis ran the 1 1-16 miles on turf in 1:40.85.
