Del Mar Horse Racing: Odds to Win Best Pal Stakes

The 6 ½ furlong $150K Best Pal Stakes for two-year-olds is set to be run on Sun. Aug. 9, 2009 on Polytrack. Nine horses are registered to run, and on race day at least six should line up for the Best Pal. Lookin at Lucky won his lone start on July 11 at Hollywood Park but will be in tough against a field that includes Classical Slew, Make Music for Me, Smiling Tiger, and Zip Quik.

Hurricane Ike will also be in the field on Sunday afternoon. He also has a maiden win at Hollywood Park this season. Others possible to run include Bob Baffert’s Tiny Woods, Michael P. Leahy’s Supraman and Robert W. Leonard’s Nuggets Please. The race is named after a Californian-born race horse who won over five million in purses racing for his owner-breeder, Golden Eagle Farm. Prior to 1995, this race was named the Balboa Stakes.
