Edgar Prado Wins Award

Acclaimed jockey Edgar Prado will receive the prestigious New York Racing Association's 2006 Mike Venezia Award in a paddock ceremony held at Belmont Park this Sunday.

The Mike Venezia Memorial Award was instituted by the New York Racing Association to honor riders who "exemplify extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship." Venezia was killed in a tragic spill at Belmont Park on October 13, 1988. The first award was given to Venezia posthumously in a ceremony at Belmont Park in 1989 at which Venezia's wife, Helene, and his children, Mike and Allison, accepted the award on his behalf.

The 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, and two-time Belmont Stakes winner, Prado was a no-brainer and won the award based on votes from fellows jockeys, turf writers, and an on-line vote by fans.

Belmont Park will lay host to a slew of Stakes Races this weekend!
