Eclipse Award winner Ginger Punch stormed through the $500,000 Sunshine Millions held at Gulfstream Park Saturday in a fury, and won by an easy 6 3/4 lengths. Even though she's laid low since her victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, she's in the best shape of her life, according to her trainer.
Ginger Punch had to overtake Peach Flambe, who took the early advantage inside the post. At the turn, Ginger Punch took on Peach Flambe and edged her out while approaching the home stretch. The rest of the 11-horse field was far behind the leaders.
"She ran her race," commented trainer Bobby Frankel, who watched the race from a distance in California. "That's the way she likes to run, stalking the leader, and she did what she had to do. It's also nice to be able to get a relatively easy race for her first start back."
The West Coast is likely next on the agenda for Ginger Punch and her posse. She may be set to race in the Santa Margarita (Gr. I) Stakes on March 9 at Santa Anita Park.
