The annual battle of Florida-bred vs. California-bred horses played out once again at Santa Anita race track on Sunday. Heavy favorite The Usual Q. T. was 11-10 going into the race but had his six-race win streak snapped and finished last in the field of nine. Instead it was the distant second choice, Bold Chieftain, who came out with the victory and paid $12.20, $4.80, and $4, while heading a $73.60 exacta.
It was the last chance for glory for the seven-year-old veteran Bold Chieftain, who was coming off a fourth-place finish in Santa Anita's San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) on Jan. 9. He came three wide into the stretch and steadied around mid-stretch, edging out Palladio who had closed in the middle of the track, but couldn’t hold off Bold Chieftain in the final furlong. Palladio paid $6.60 and $4.40, while 50-1 long shot Unusual Smoke paid $13.40 to show.
