Jay Peg Sets a Course Record in the Dubai $5 Million Duty Free
Despite the saddle coming lose near the end of the race, Jay Peg shocked the crowd as the 50-1 long shot won the first Turf Race of the night at Nad Al Sheba.
The winner’s time of 1:46.20 at the 1 1/8-mile event even surprised trainer Herman Brown. He has supported the colt through his past four starts, including a runner-up effort in the March 6 Nayef Jebel Hatta at Nad Al Sheba, in which Jay Peg lost by a length to Lord Admiral.
“I really didn’t think they went that fast, but it doesn’t matter,” Brown said. “Some people were disappointed with his last run, but I knew this horse would fight when it came to a battle.”
Jay Peg broke well from gate, establishing a clean run around the course, finding tons of room in the final stretch. Vodka and Darjina kept close to the rail for the majority of the race after Jay Peg made his move, but he was able to fend off their last minute sprint.
“He always enjoys the fight,” said jockey Anton Marcus. “It was always my intention to (come with a late run). This is certainly the best victory of my career; the reality probably won’t sink in until I get on the plane Monday.”
