Gulfstream Park on Feb.10 was host to a historical triumph for Edgar Prado, he won his 6,000th race aboard Sumphin to win the $50,000 maiden claiming race as the 5-2 third choice. Prado is the 16th jockey in North America to ever reach the 6,000 winning races milestone.
Surrounded by family and friends in the winner’s circle, Prado said, “I'm glad it happened at Gulfstream Park. I had my 5,000th win here. It's an honor to be around this group of jockeys. The fans are great, and the other jockeys are very competitive. I hoped I could reach a goal like this. I've remained very positive.”
When asked if he had always wanted to race horses he stated, ''No, I didn't love racing at the beginning.'' Prado started riding horses when he was five. “I liked it, but it wasn't my first love. I wanted to be a lawyer. I would work with the horses in the morning, go to school in the afternoon and ride horses at night. My plan was to ride horses to pay my tuition.”
Prado is most likely known best for leading Barbaro to the finish line to win the Kentucky Derby in 2006.
