Colonel John captured the Sham Stakes on Saturday by defeating fellow Kentucky Derby contender El Gato Malo. After a slow start by all the horses, Colonel John broke to the lead as he approached the finish line and galloped past the favorite, El Gato Malo, to win the $200,000 Grade III Race.
A colt by Tiznow, this was Colonel John's first start since finishing second in the CashCall Futurity on Dec. 22. Bred and owned by the WinStar Farm of Bill Casner and Kenny Trout, Colonel John has won three of his five starts and is trained by Eoin Harty.
Colonel John will next compete in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (Grade I) on April 5 then the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
