He is 2 for 2 at Gulfstream and has been rested of late. The Handicap will be run at one-mile this year, and will be Formidable’s first stakes attempt and his first going that distance on dirt.

He’ll be stepping up against a field that includes several graded-stakes performers, including Robert LaPenta’s Cool Coal Man, winner of the 2008 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2). Cool Coal Man will be attempting to become the second horse to win the Fountain of Youth and Gulfstream Park Handicap since Sensitive Prince did it back in 1978-79.

“We will see what happens,” said trainer Allen Jerkens who had previously voiced concerns about the distance. “Just because we want him to be a distance horse doesn’t mean he’s going to be one.”
