Bob Baffert has to be one of the happiest horse trainers in America right now. After winning The Victory Ride with Rapport at Saratoga earlier on Saturday, Baffert's entry in the 2010 Pacific Classic, Richard's Kid, also became a winner.
For the second year in a row, Richard's Kid outran the entire Classic field -- including The Usual Q.T., who was favored to win the Classic (as it would have been his third straight victory and second straight Grade 1 at Del Mar. Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Richard's Kid beat second place finisher Crowded House by three-quarters of a length in 2:03.27 on Saturday, the second of two $1 million-dollar Grade 1 races taking place today.
For the win, Richard's Kid paid $11.60, $5.60, $3.80 -- and is guaranteed a spot in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic. Crowded House returned $10.60 and $6.40 for the second-place finish and Dakota Phone placed third and paid $4.80 to show. The Usual Q.T. finished fifth.
