On December 14, the Delaware Racing Commission has announced that steroids and all other illegal substances will be outlawed when the 2008 live racing season begins at Delaware Park. Mid –Atlantic Regulators are making an effort to ban these substances as well.
Commission Executive Director John Wayne, who is overseeing the commission, told the Delaware Department of Agriculture that all horsemen would be advised of the ban on anabolic and androgenic steroids.
The most common steroids used include Boldenone (Equipoise), stanozolol (Winstrol), nandrolone (Durabolin), and testosterone.
The Racing and Medication Testing Consortium Various who governs these particular drugs will be implementing these rules and regulations in various states. This will be good timing as Delaware begins its first meet on April 19th.
“It takes up to 120 days for a horse to clear steroids from their system,” Wayne said in a statement. “This advance warning gives horsemen adequate time, actually in excess of the 120-day recommended withdrawal time.”
Other commissions expected to implement these rules are Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Dover Downs and Harrington Raceway overseen by the Delaware Harness Racing Commission will have to issue its own ban for Standard bred racing.
The RMTC and state regulators feel publishing a three-month withdrawal time for the substances would accomplish the goal to stop the use of anabolic steroids on race day.
Steroids still could be used for therapeutic use and will have its own regulations made well before race day.
