On Sept 16, it was announced by trainer Todd Pletcher that Belmont Winner Rags to Riches suffered a hairline fracture to her right front pastern while racing in the Gazelle Stakes this past Saturday.
"She is expected to make a full recovery," Pletcher said. "It appears as though she sustained the injury during the stretch run. When she switched to the right lead, she came off the bridle and lugged in a bit. Though she cooled out fine following the race, she appeared to be slightly off this morning. Subsequent X-rays revealed the hairline fracture.”
Yesterday morning the filly was boarded onto a van at Belmont Park, headed to part-owner John Magnier's Ashford Stud, where she will have six weeks of stall rest to give the fracture time to heal.
Pletcher said that if Rags to Riches were a colt, "she probably would be retired. She is a filly. As of now, she is going to run in 2008 assuming that everything heals properly and she comes back and trains satisfactory."
In the current standing Rags to Riches was ranked 5th among the top ten for earning $1,340,028 in six starts. This year the Breeders' Cup has been expanded to two days and includes three new races, bringing the 11-race purse total to $23 million.
