Kip Deville may have had all the press going in to the Woodbine Mile on Sunday, Sept. 7 but it was Rahy's Attorney who had everyone talking afterwards with his surprising win over the race favorite.
Defending Breeders' Cup Mile champion Kip Deville was coming off a three-race win streak and was looking to upgrade his runners-up finish in last year's Woodbine Mile. But after a strong start, keeping pace behind Just Rushing, he began to falter—and Rahy's Attorney, who had been stalking the leaders along the rail, made his move mid-turn. Jockey Slade Callaghan guided Rahy's Attorney to the outside of Just Rushing and he powered to the forefront. He managed to stave off a late challenge from star filly Ventura and won by 1-1/4 lengths. Kip Deville finished fifth.
Rahy's Attorney's recent racing history includes a fourth-place finish at the Nijinsky Stakes in August, a third-place finish in an allowance race at Woodbine in July and a second-place finish in the Singspiel Stakes in June. His only previous victory this year was in the Gr. 3 Connaught Cup Stakes where he was considered a surprise winner as well.
Now, Rahy's Attorney's connections have a difficult decision to make. Because the 4-year-old was not originally nominated to the Breeders' Cup, a supplement fee of $180,000 US must be paid in order for him to take advantage of his guaranteed berth into the Breeders' Cup Mile. However, Rahy's Attorney's winnings from the Woodbine total $600,000 and he will have a chance to knock off some of the premier milers in racing at the Breeders' Cup in October at Santa Anita—perhaps the decision won't be so difficult after all.
