The 2007 Triple Crown races were among the most competitive in recent memory, as the results prove.
All three million-dollar horse races were close, they each featured a different winner and the victors - Street Sense, Curlin and Rags to Riches - were all among the top two or three betting favorites in the respective races they won. Those facts are a testament to the high-level of talent in this year's 3-year-old thoroughbred class. Here's a look back at the 2007 Triple Crown results:
Kentucky Derby, May 5 - Street Sense left 19 other horses in his dust. He rallied down the stretch to payout $11.80 to win, $6.40 to place and $4.60 to show, and finished 2.5 lengths ahead of runnerup Hard Spun. Previously unbeaten Curlin, the 5/1 second choice, finished another 5.75 lengths back. Hard Spun paid $9.80 to place and $7 to show. Curlin paid $5.60 to show.
Preakness Stakes, May 19 - Curlin overtook Derby winner Street Sense on the last stride and paid $8.80 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.80 to show. The finish was one of the most thrilling in the 132 years of the Preakness. Street Sense returned $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Hard Spun paid $3.00 to show.
Belmont Stakes, June 9 - Rags to Riches made history by becoming the first filly in 102 years to win the 1.5-mile Belmont. She nipped Curlin in a fantastic finish, paying $10.60 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.20 to show. Favorite Curlin paid $3.00 to place and $2.30 to show. Tiago paid $3.70 to show.
