For two-time Kentucky Derby winner and popular jockey Calvin Borel, the accolades never seem to stop. Over the past weekend Borel learned that he is this year's recipient of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.
George Woolf is the jockey responsible for riding Seabiscuit to victory over Triple Crown winner War Admiral in 1938
Voted on by members of the Jockey's Guild and presented to a rider who demonstrates high standards of personal and professional conduct, on and off the racetrack, the Woolf Award is so named after one of the most popular riders of the 1940s, Canadian George Monroe Woolf of Cardston, Alberta. Among Woolf's many big wins, his most famous happened back in 1938 in the Pimlico Special; that was when Woolf rode Seabiscuit to victory over the heavily favored U.S. Triple Crown champion War Admiral.
Borel will accept the award at Santa Anita on March 14, the day after the $200,000 New Orleans Ladies Stakes at Fair Grounds where Borel will be taking 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra for her 2010 debut race.
