When the dust settled and the throngs had settled into their seat draws yesterday at Casino San Remo to start Day 1B of the EPT San Remo, the official number of entrants for the entire tournament hit 702. This number puts it just four players short of becoming the largest EPT event ever held on European soil, just behind last year's Grand Final.
As it is, the event will have to settle for being the largest regular season EPT event ever held on European soil. Not too shabby. When asked, the EPT San Remo said... nothing because it's not a person.
The 361 players who came out yesterday included some of the world's best as well as Europe's best: Daniel Negreanu, Lee Nelson, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Todd Brunson, Chad Brown, Vanessa Rousso, Marco Traniello, Isabelle Mercier, Tony G, Juha Helppi and Max "The Italian Pirate" Pescatori. However, only 109 players would survive the day to come back to be part of the combined Day 2 field.
That Day 2 field consists of 208 players and that number is quickly dwindling as play is already underway. Notable poker players Pascal Perrault and Steve Zolotow have already hit the rail and many more will follow over the next eight levels of play.
Current chip leader is Finland's Ville Nyman, who also led the Day 1A field at the end of play. He is followed closely by Frenchman Eric Koskas and Henrik Brockmann. Poker pro Liz Lieu and online poker phenom Isaac "westmenloAA" Baron are also close to the top of the leaderboard at the moment.
Stay tuned for more updates from the Beat as the last EPT event of the regular season gets closer to a champion.
