The man that says he loaned Middle Tennessee State University quarterback Dwight Dasher has stated that the money was specifically given to the football player for poker and not for sports gambling. This actually clarifies a lot of the controversy around the relationship between the men as far as the NCAA is concerned. 80-year-old Oliver Donnell told authorities that he loaned Dasher a total of $1,500 in five installments of $300 apiece. Donnell said that he did not see the QB play poker, but that Dasher told him that he lost the money in poker games. Note: The Beat covered Dwight Dasher situation earlier in the week.
Donnell also stated that he "ran a sports book" in the late 70s and early 1980s, but he never discussed sports gambling with the MTSU player.
"It never came up. I didn’t bring it up, and he didn’t bring it up."
As is typical of the university's stance concerning the allegations against Dasher, MTSU declined to make the player available for comment. It is important to note that no formal charges of any kind have been filed against the football player by any individual or law enforcement authority. He's the subject of an internal inquiry being held by MTSU as well as answering questions from MTSU police according to documentation filed with the campus police.
MTSU officials have also declined to comment about anything related to the Dasher situation until their inquiry is completed.
