Tonight at 5pm PST / 8pm EST the airing of the ESPN TV coverage of the 2009 WSOP begins, starting with the 40th Anniversary $40,000 No Limit Hold'em event. Tonight also begins our weekly ritual of watching that ESPN coverage, squinting into the background and yelling "that was us ... maybe" at the TV if we spot someone familiar walking by.
Anyway, this inaugural Anniversary event drew out one of the more talented fields of the entire 2009 WSOP and definitely resulted in the most compelling final table. At that final table were 2004 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Raymer, young guns Isaac Haxton and Lex Veldhuis, multiple WSOP bracelet winner Vitaly Lunkin and Bodog Poker pro Justin Bonomo.
If you followed along with our 2009 WSOP live updates over the summer then you already know what happens, if not...
**SPOILER ALERT**
Bonomo goes on to place fifth, walking away with $413,166 in prize money. Raymer, Haxton and Lunkin battle it out three-handed for quite some time before Raymer exits in third for $774,927. Haxton goes into the heads up match against Lunkin with a 2 to 1 chip lead, loses that lead seven hands later, regains the lead an hour later, loses it again and eventually succumbs to Lunkin. Haxton receives $1,168,566 for second place and Lunkin gets $1,891,012 for the victory.
