According to this article in the San Jose Mercury News, a 20-year veteran poker player at the Garden City Casino in San Jose, Calif., was found beaten outside of the back entrance to the card room early this past Saturday morning.

Hooshang "David" Pyrooz died Monday from injuries suffered in the assault, police announced. It is not known if Pyrooz had played cards that night or if he left the casino with a large sum of money.

"Investigators don't know what he was doing there, or who he was with," said officer Enrique Garcia, a police spokesman. "Was he the target or a victim that was randomly attacked?"

Pyrooz was found lying on the curb at the intersection of Kiely Boulevard and Northlake Drive, which faces the card room's rear entrance.
