While the 2008 Aussie Millions main event has degraded into a battle of the unknowns, focus has shifted over to the heads-up event, a format that is becoming a popular addition to major tournament schedules.
The field started out with 64 players including most of the names that we expected to go deep in the championship event including Phil Laak, Sorel "imper1um" Mizzi, Mike Matusow, Lee Watkinson, Roland de Wolfe, Andy Bloch, Jenn Tilly, Josh "JJProdigy" Field, Paul Wasicka, Annette "Annette_15" Obrestad, Anna Wroblewski, Jeff Madsen, and Rafe Furst.
So, basically, as the big names busted out of the main event, they walked over and tossed their $5,300 into the ring to play heads-up poker. Now, there are only eight players remaining from that original field including a couple of well-known online poker players.
Here are the quarterfinal match-ups:
Lee Nelson vs Roy Winston
Masaaki Kagawa vs Mike "Timex" McDonald
Jeff "ActionJeff" Garza vs David Sonelin
Alexey Popov vs Xuan Nguyen
These matches will pick back up at 2:30 p.m. local time with each of the remaining eight players guaranteed at least $20,000 in prize money.
