2009 US Open Tennis: Serena Williams Profile

Serena Williams is not No. 1, according to the rankings, but she has won three of the past four Grand Slams, including the 2008 U.S. Open, and is the favorite to defend her title. As usual, Williams hasn't played much since Wimbledon, but it doesn't matter. When she's at her best at a Slam, it's hard for anyone to beat her.
Currently she is listed at +175 to win it all this year.
Serena can seem lost at regular tour stops as she failed to win once this year in 11 non-Slam events and fell in the first round three times. But her competitive fire burns bright at the majors.
Serena cannot reclaim the No. 1 spot even if she lifts the trophy in New York and Dinara Safina suffers a first-round exit.
She also can't meet her sister in the final. Serena and Venus are in the same half of the field.
