Rios (29-0-1) is in the prime of his career and has been a wrecking machine for over three years, going 11-0 with nine KOs. He will come into the fight as a heavy favorite, and there’s little reason to believe that Abril is going to be the one that’s able to handle his combination of speed and power.
Keys to victory for Rios will be as they always are - to stalk his opponent and take him out with heavy punches in bunches. There is a potential weight question for Rios, but one has to believe that those issues would have been addressed properly over the last few months with a world title on the line.
Abril (17-2-1) will be coming off the biggest win of his career that saw him claim the WBA Interim title, but he will still be the underdog in his bid to win the real strap this weekend. What the Cuban challenger does have going for him is that he’s never been knocked out in his career, and if he’s tough enough that could play a role late in the fight.
Abril will surely look to evade Rios and out-box him for a decision victory. His hit and run style will need to be at its best and he will need to stay away from mixing it up with his hard-hitting opponent. It’s tough to become a champion with an elusive style, but this title is vacant so it won’t be situation where he has to take a champion’s title away.
