Gaines Adams, a defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, died Sunday, Jan. 17, in South Carolina. He was only 26-years-old.

Gaines Adams, who was an all-American at Clemson, died of cardiac arrest. He had gone into cardiac arrest at his family's home in Greenwood, said Marcia Kelley-Clark, chief deputy coroner for Greenwood County. Apparently, Adams had an enlarged heart which caused the cardiac arrest.

“We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines’ passing,” the Bears said in a statement. “Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

After being acquired in October in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Adams played in 10 games as a reserve for the Bears.
