Saturday, Apr. 19 in Las Vegas, NV, undefeated Welsh fighter Joe Calzaghe (44-0) will take on Bernard Hopkins (48-4-1) in a light-heavyweight bout.
The longest reigning title-holder in boxing history, Calzaghe unified the super middleweight titles by beating Mikkel Kessler (40-1-0) by unanimous decision on Nov. 3, 2007, adding the WBA and WBC belts to his collection, along with the WBO title, which he has held for over 10-years.
At a news conference on Jan. 23, the 35-year old said he's looking forward to moving up to the heavier weight class and facing Hopkins, 43, for his first fight on American soil.
"I've unified the titles and, if I go over there and win, then I've done everything," he said. "To go to the States and beat their top man at light-heavyweight, there's no one who can pick holes in my career."
Coming off a win over Ronald "Winky" Wright (55-4-1), Hopkins marks a big step up for Calzaghe, who has struggled to make a name for himself outside of Britain. Still, "The Pride of Wales" says he's ready to slug it out with a heavier opponent on enemy turf.
"He definitely needs a facelift and I'm going to sort him out," Calzage explained. "I just hope he's not going to run. If he comes toe-to-toe, it's going to be a war and hell of a treat for the fans."
