The chase for perfection will have to resume another year.

The No. 1 Memphis Tigers lost their first game of the season, falling to in-state rival Tennessee, 66-62, on Saturday night. The second-ranked Volunteers will likely take over the top spot in the national college basketball polls for the first time in school history.

Tyler Smith hit a turnaround jumper from inside the paint to give Tennessee a one-point lead with 26.5 seconds to play. J.P. Prince, who scored 12 points off the bench, hit two free throws with 8.8 seconds to go to secure the win.

The point spread favored Memphis by 5.5 points while the betting total fell under 156 points.

Smith scored a team-high 16 points and Wayne Chism added 13 as the Volunteers battled for the win in front of a raucous crowd in Memphis. The Tigers fell to 26-1 while the Vols improved to 25-2. It was Memphis’ first loss at home in 48 games.
