The Memphis Tigers are still unbeaten – barely.
A three-point play by star forward Chris Douglas-Roberts with six seconds to play lifted the No. 1 team in college basketball to a 79-78 victory over the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers Saturday night.
Playing on the road in Bartow Arena, the Tigers trailed 77-70 with less than 1:45 to play. Memphis converted three consecutive three-point plays and outscored the Blazers 9-1 to close the game and improve to 25-0.
Antonio Anderson, who finished with 27 points, started the flurry with a three-pointer with 1:23 to play. Douglas-Roberts hit a three with 39 seconds to go to make it 77-76 then drove to the hole and made a game-tying layup while drawing a foul. He made the free throw to give the Tigers the lead.
Robert Vaden had a chance to pull the upset for the Blazers, but he missed a three-pointer with a second to go. Vaden finished with a team-high 25 points. Unranked UAB dropped to 17-8.
Douglas-Roberts, who is making a run at national player of the year honors, led all-scorers with 32 points.
Memphis was favored by nine against the point spread and the betting total went over 137 points.
