Even when they struggle, the Vanderbilt Commodores give college basketball fans reason to pay attention.
No. 20 Vandy entered Wednesday night’s game against DePaul with the SEC’s top two scorers but both Shan Foster and A.J. Ogilvy failed to do much early as the Commodores found themselves in an 18-point hole.
But Vanderbilt rallied from the 58-40 halftime deficit to force overtime in Rosemont, Ill. Ogilvy scored the tying hoop with 22 seconds to play then delivered the go-ahead dunk in the extra session. Foster extended the advantage to four points with a three-pointer as Vanderbilt escaped with a 91-85 OT victory.
Vanderbilt (10-0) even managed to cover the point spread, which was 4.5.
Both Foster and Ogilvy finished with 19 points and proved that Vandy has a solid two-man tandem that can be dangerous come March Madness.
In other Top 25 action on Wednesday:
No. 17 Xavier 64, Cincinnati 59: Derrick Brown scored 17 points to lead the Musketeers, who lost senior Josh Duncan to a second-half injury. Duncan’s injury was one reason Xavier failed to cover the 19-point spread in Cincinnati.
No. 25 BYU 88, Lamar 66: The unfortunately named Lee Cummard proved potent with 25 points and 10 rebounds, leading the heavily favored Cougars to an overwhelming victory in Provo, Utah.
